A charming piece of American folk and schoolroom history, this framed original pencil interior drawing attributed to Martha E. Plummer depicts a carefully observed domestic scene with a paneled mantel or cabinet, vase, flowers, furnishings, and architectural details rendered in delicate graphite line work and shading. The reverse is especially interesting, retaining an original penmanship practice sheet from Wells School repeatedly inscribed “Truth is the guiding star to every other virtue” and signed “M. E. Plummer,” providing a direct connection between the drawing and its maker. A handwritten notation on the backing identifies the material as taken from the sketchbook of Martha E. Plummer.
The elegant Spencerian-style handwriting and character of the drawing suggest a late 19th- to early 20th-century American schoolwork/sketchbook origin, approximately 1880s–1910s. Presented under glass with neutral matting and a silver-gold tone frame, this unusual double-sided survival combines original artwork, antique penmanship, educational history, and personal ephemera in one decorative piece. Good antique condition with toning, small marks, and age-related wear.
