Representing a remarkable collaboration between two accomplished artists, this handcrafted ceramic art tray was created by noted Indiana ceramic artist and longtime Herron School of Art instructor Mark Richardson, featuring a fish motif designed by renowned Japanese textile artist Ayako Miyawaki. The stylized sea bream image reflects traditional Japanese symbolism associated with happiness, celebration, and prosperity, while Richardson’s ceramic craftsmanship transforms the textile design into a richly detailed relief sculpture in clay. Produced in 1989 through a labor-intensive process of pressing, glazing, and multiple kiln firings, the tray stands as an exceptional example of cross-cultural studio art. Included are the original artist print and informational brochure documenting the collaboration and creative process, adding significant provenance and collectible appeal. A distinctive piece for collectors of studio pottery, Japanese art, ceramic sculpture, or Herron School of Art works. Good vintage condition, minor wear consistent with age and use.
