This vintage 1979 framed cross-stitch artwork depicts the historic tugboat Dorothy, Hull Number One—the first vessel constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia. Designed by Horace See and delivered in April 1891, the 90-foot iron tugboat operated in New York Harbor until 1912 and later served Hampton Roads as the J. Alvah Clark. After a 1964 collision, the vessel was restored by shipyard employees and dedicated as a memorial in 1976. Initialed “CB 79,” the detailed needlework is displayed beneath glass with layered rose-colored matting and a decorative silver-tone and black frame. An informational history sheet remains attached to the reverse. Good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and display.
